What is Microsoft Dynamics NAV?

Microsoft Dynamics NAV is an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. It was first launched by Microsoft in 2005 after they acquired Navision in 2002. Dynamics NAV offers organisations the ability to manage their finance, operations, projects, supply chain and warehouses. It is extremely popular with small and medium sized organisations with over 100,000 organisations worldwide using the solution.

What does Dynamics NAV do?

Dynamics NAV is an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. It provides capability in the following areas: finance, operations, sales and projects.

What is the difference between Navision and Dynamics NAV?

Navision was the name of the original Danish company that Microsoft acquired in 2002. This was changed to Dynamics NAV by Microsoft, but many customers still refer to it as Dynamics Navision or just Navision.

What is the difference between Dynamics NAV and Dynamics 365 Business Central?

Dynamics NAV is a legacy product from Microsoft that is an on-premise solution. Dynamics 365 Business Central is the new online service from Microsoft, updated capability, improved reporting, improved UI, built-in intelligence and can be extended via third party apps (validated extensions) in Microsoft AppSource.

Dynamics 365 Business Central is based on Dynamics NAV and so the capability available will be very familiar to users of Dynamics NAV.

Is Dynamics NAV still available to buy?

As of April 2019, Dynamics NAV is no longer available to new customers. If you are an existing customer, you can still buy additional licenses and upgrade to newer versions of the product.

Is Dynamics NAV still supported by Microsoft?

Most recent versions of Dynamics NAV are still in mainstream support, however some of the older versions including Dynamics NAV 2013 and Dynamics NAV 2009 are now out of mainstream support. For a full list of versions and out of support dates visit our article here.

What does Dynamics 365 Business Central mean for Dynamics NAV customers?

For existing users of Dynamics NAV there are now 3 options available:

  • Migrate to Dynamics 365 Business Central cloud: By migrating to Dynamics 365 Business Central in the cloud, customers will get all the benefits of a true cloud solution, like easy 24/7 access anywhere from any device with Microsoft’s secure servers, seamless upgrades, easy integration building through web APIs, and reduced hardware costs.
  • Upgrade to Dynamics 365 Business central on-premise and try Intelligent Cloud Insights: Upgrading to Dynamics 365 Business Central on-premise keeps customers current while allowing them the option of getting some limited benefits of cloud through Intelligent Cloud Insights. Dynamics 365 Business Central on-premise is built for on-premise deployment. It can also be hosted on a client server or Azure, but it does not offer the same seamless experience as a fully managed cloud-based solution. This is a good solution if your customer prefers to host their software at their location right now and wants to have a path to migrate to the cloud when they are ready.
  • Renew BREP (Business Ready Enhancement Plan) without migrating or upgrading: Customers can stay on their current Dynamics NAV system by renewing their BREP.

What discount is available for existing Dynamics NAV customers moving to Dynamics 365 Business Central?

Microsoft has made a 40% discount on Dynamics 365 Business Central licenses (cloud), this discount applies until June 2021 and reduces the license cost to:

Essential – £31.67 (previously £52.79)

Premium – £45.24 (previously £75.40)

Team Member £3.60 (previously £6.00)

This discount applies to the cloud licenses, and there are other discounts available for the hybrid approach.

If I am on Dynamics NAV do I need to move to Dynamics 365 Business Central?

No, you can stay on Dynamics NAV for as long as you want. The product will always be available. Over time it will no longer be updated, but your licence is perpetual. There will be some considerations that might prompt you to consider a move, such as:

  • Your version of Dynamics NAV going out of support
  • Your requirements changing
  • Changes in tax or regulations
  • A desire to embrace new technologies

With a good support partner, you should be able to mitigate some of these risks and you can always upgrade to the latest version of Dynamics NAV if your system is not too heavily customised allowing you to stay on Dynamics NAV for longer.

Can I migrate from Dynamics NAV to Dynamics 365 Business Central?

Yes, there are a number of migration tools available from Microsoft to support you moving from Dynamics NAV to Dynamics 365 Business Central. You will require the assistance of a Microsoft partner and the complexity of the migration will largely be based on how many changes you require and how heavily customised your existing system is.

How can I find out how customised my existing instance of Dynamics NAV is?

Yes, customers can migrate their customisations and integrations by upgrading to Dynamics 365 Business Central on-premise and then converting their customisations to extensions.

As part of a customer’s transition, we suggest that you evaluate your customisations and integrations and determine which ones are still required or cost-effective to redevelop for Dynamics 365 Business Central. You may find new features that meet your requirements or third-party applications that integrate with Business Central that offers a more cost-effective approach.

What help and support is available for organisations using Dynamics NAV?
