About Proserv: growth through acquisition

Proserv is a global energy services provider that works with oil and gas and offshore renewables organisations to optimise the lifespan and performance of their assets. It has 1,400 employees across 22 facilities in 12 countries around the world.

Due to the company’s rapid growth, they required a group wide ERP system that would manage their expanding finance and manufacturing operations worldwide. Proserv selected Dynamics AX and worked with Incremental Group during the implementation.

Delivering Enterprise Systems Globally

Proserv needed a delivery solution that would effectively provide access to their Dynamics AX ERP system across the globe. Access was needed from remote offices and manufacturing sites around the world, as well as for remote, home and mobile users.

Whilst Proserv already had a local IT provider managing their infrastructure, they needed a specialist partner with experience in designing, installing and maintaining large enterprise systems globally. They needed this solution to be delivered as ‘infrastructure in a box’ in order that it could be managed separately and still integrate with the rest of their global IT infrastructure.

Infrastructure in a Box

Incremental Group proposed a Citrix solution that could be rapidly deployed and rolled out to Proserv’s 1,200 users. Incremental Group’s knowledge of and capabilities in both Dynamics AX and Citrix was key.

Incremental Group designed, installed and provide on-going support and monitoring of the hardware and network infrastructure required to support up to 1,200 concurrent users of the Dynamics ERP system. It provided a resilient Citrix XenDesktop architecture with the ability to scale to support up to 1,200 users initially, with flexibility to support future growth. A highly available SQL Server cluster, to support both the Dynamics AX ERP databases and Citrix databases, was also delivered.

The Project also involved:

  • Citrix Provisioning Services to allow a single master image to be maintained for all applications, supporting version control and allowing rapid scale out of the required number of Citrix servers
  • Deployment of Citrix Netscaler technology to support both internal and external access to all applications
  • Global rollout of the Citrix Receiver Client to enable access to Citrix from any Proserv device
  • Implementing a back-up and recovery solution to a data centre in Houston from Proserv’s UK data centre, allowing replication and recovery of the full Dynamics AX ERP system, including the Citrix infrastructure. In the event of a disaster users can access their virtual desktop securely via the Houston data centre.
  • Delivering an excellent end-user experience by using key Citrix features such as single sign-on, “follow me” printing, session pre-launch and linger, optimised graphics display protocols and session reliability
  • 24×7 support.

This Citrix infrastructure now supports not only Dynamics AX, but a number of Proserv’s other core legacy applications, enabling access from remote locations.

Global Access to Legacy Systems

Incremental Group delivered a robust Citrix solution that provided access to Proserv’s new on premise Dynamics AX ERP system from anywhere round the world, at any time, on any device.

It allows users to access a centralised Windows application just as if they were in the office. The system performs well even on relatively low speed Internet connections. Proserv also benefits from fast and easy deployment of application updates to a single image and instant roll-out.

Seamless Transition to the Cloud

The current Citrix infrastructure is continually maintained and upgraded, incorporating new versions and features that improve the end user experience and add business value.

Proserv’s overall IT strategy is to continue to migrate applications and systems to the Cloud. This has already begun with Office 365 and other applications. There are a number of other applications that will take longer due to their size, complexity and reliance on other systems that cannot be simply migrated to the Cloud.

Citrix will play a key in enabling a seamless transition to the Cloud by presenting these applications to users in a consistent manner, through Citrix Storefront and their Citrix Receiver client. It is invisible to the user where the applications reside – they can be on premise or in the Cloud running in Azure or even as a Software as a Service (SaaS) application. Once all applications are finally in the Cloud, Citrix can still present them to the user through pane of glass, making it a seamless experience for the user to launch applications.
